Microsoft has updated two of the most emblematic Windows applications. The latest version of the Insider channel offers Generative AI features for Notepad and Paint that will allow you to rewrite texts, edit photos and delete objects.
In a Windows blog postMicrosoft announced the new features that will be integrated into Paint and Notepad. Although this is not the first time we have seen a push towards AI, this update gives life to two applications that until some time ago remained abandoned.
In the case of Paint, the image editor has integrated generative filling, a feature that allows insert AI-generated objects via a text instruction. Users can select a part of the image with the tool Selection and write a prompt with the description of the object to create it.
If you don’t like the result, you can press the button try again for generate a new image or add more details in the text box. Paint’s AI will rely on the lighting, style, colors and location of the box to produce a believable object. Once you are happy with the generated image, you can press the button Keep to apply it to the canvas.
Paint can delete or generate content with the help of AI
Paint’s generative fill is similar to what the most recent version of Photoshop offers. Unlike Adobe, images are generated locally with the help of your computer’s neural processing unit (NPU). The only drawback is that this function is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs with a Qualcomm processor.
Another AI feature coming to Paint is the Generative erase. As its name says, this tool is used to delete objects or people from an image without altering the background. To do this, it uses language models that They calculate and fill the space to make it look like the object was never there.
Generative Erase is activated through the eraser tool. If you want to delete an object, you just have to paint it with the generative erase brush and press Apply for the AI to do its job. Unlike generative fill, AI-assisted object deletion does not require an NPU, so it will reach all Windows 11 computers.
Lastly, Microsoft added the ability to rewrite text in Notepad. This feature is useful for rephrasing sentences, adjusting tone, and modifying the length of your content directly in a text file. To activate it, you just need to select the text, press the right mouse click and choose the option Rewrite.
If you have felt déjà vu you are not the only one. The possibility of rewriting text in Notepad was leaked through some screenshots published at the beginning of 2024. Microsoft took its time and decided that it is time to put it to the test, so you can use it if you are a member of the program Windows 11 Insider.
