Car touch screens may not have been well received by all drivers, but the potential they have is undeniable. It is thanks to these devices that it is possible to use Android Auto and with this system, all our favorite apps such as Google Maps or Spotify. In fact, screens open the door to different uses, such as watching movies in the car without having to have a tablet.
However, it is no less true that most of today’s car touch screens are not particularly notable in terms of quality; It is understandable, since they have been developed prioritizing visibility and safety. But little by little, that is changing, and we are already seeing car screens more typical of a ‘home cinema’; and soon, that will be literal.
Samsung Display and Dolby Laboratories have announced a collaboration agreement that could change the way we view car screens. Specifically, the agreement has been signed to promote Dolby Vision, HDR image technologyand its implementation in Samsung OLED screens.
In other words, we will have in-car screens with Dolby Visioncapable of showing videos with surprising quality thanks to OLED technology and the high brightness and contrast they allow.
It seems a bit strange to talk about a car screen as if it were a television, but that’s basically what this agreement consists of; It is even more ironic if we take into account that Samsung does not offer Dolby Vision on its OLED televisions, preferring to opt for HDR10+.
The effect that this collaboration can have on the automotive industry cannot be underestimated. Samsung Display is already the leading manufacturer of OLED panels for automobilesdistributing the largest quantity during the last quarter with 540,000 units, a great growth compared to the beginning of 2023, when barely 100,000 units left the factory.
Samsung Display is a recognized brand, and there is no shortage of manufacturers that have taken the leap as soon as the company has offered the possibility. We have a good example in the new Mini, which has a circular screen that has been possible thanks to Samsung Display’s OLED technology. In addition, Samsung presented its digital car concepts at recent CES, with several screens arranged throughout the interior, and it is expected that at the next CES 2025 we will see the first results of this new collaboration with Dolby.
