One of the side effects of the majority of people using their cell phone as a camera is that smartphones with a lot of internal memory are needed or, what is becoming more and more common, they have to use a cloud storage service. In Spain, one of the most common is Google Photos, as it comes pre-installed on all Android phones and is compatible with iOS.

This service is not the only one that can be used since there are others like Amazon Photos that are cheaper, although less known. But the advantages of Google Photos are not only based on its affordable prices or integration with the rest of the Google ecosystem. This app too It is a tool to edit photos in a simple way.

For many years, users of the app have been able to modify photos in a simple way by entering the editing menu and cropping the image, changing the contrast, brightness or using different filters. It is not something different from what other applications like Instagram do, but Since the app is focused on storing photos and not on sharing them, it is more comfortable to use.

But this type of editing was not new, it had been used on mobile phones for years, practically since smartphones began to include cameras. However, in recent years Artificial intelligence has become a much more advanced way of editing images. We have seen it in desktop applications like Photoshop, but also in other programs.

Samsung launched Galaxy AI when it presented the Samsung Galaxy S24 Series and with this it opened a door to photo editing using artificial intelligence to the general public. With the integrated options you could create illustrations, put objects in the images… We have already tested this new technology and saw the potential it had, but also some of its flaws.

Obviously those functions were only available for Samsung phonesbut not for everyone, only for the most powerful. Then they came to foldables and recently they did it to the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE. But although Samsung sells many mobile phones in Spain, this is not an option for everyone.

That’s where Google Photos and its new advanced editing tools come in. with artificial intelligence. These new features were paid until recently, but Google has decided to make them available to everyone including users of the free plans, the same as it has done with Gemini Live.

This new feature allows modify elements of photos to delete themsomething that was already available, but also for change your shape. The Magic Editor allows us to select a part of the photos to move it around or change the size, or both at the same time. To do this we just have to open a photo, click on the Edit icon and then select Magic Editor from the colored icon at the bottom left.

When we enter the new editing window we will be asked to hold down the screen to select the object in question. It can be a person, an element or whatever we want. The automatic selection does not always choose the object perfectly but if we click on the button Adjust selection We can add or eliminate parts of it so that we obtain the precisely defined object.

Once this is done we can pinch it to change its size, making it larger or smaller. Keep in mind that if it is an object that casts shadows, you must select the shadows as well. Once done, click on the colored arrow in the lower left corner and we will see how the system uses AI to change the size of the object but, above all, to fill in the gaps left behind.

Since it will not always do it perfectly, it gives us several options, and we can choose any of them to save as a copywhich will prevent us from losing the original image. In addition, it is possible to ask the system, if we liked none of the four, to generate more options.

Using this tool is practical to modify elements that are in the image completely, but also to move objects that have not been perfectly framed from the edge of the shot. With some help, the intelligent generation will be able to recompose the element and remove it completely from the scene. Of course, it is very complicated to do this with depending on what elements, such as hair, vegetation, etc.

Just to this function, Google has added others that also use AI, such as the Magic Eraser that we already knew or the one that increases the sharpness in old photos, which allows us to recover images that were taken with cameras that did not have much resolution or improve images that came out blurry but that we did not want to delete because we did not have better options.

In a few weeks, an even more powerful tool is expected to arrive on Google Photos, which allows us to automatically reframe any image and another that will allow us to edit photos with AI. The latter will be similar to what brands like Samsung already have, but integrated into Google Photos. For now it is not known if it will be something exclusive to the Pixel, to paying Google One users or will it be available to everyone with a Google account.
